O que é Hexamitíase?
Uma doença que afeta principalmente os ciclídeos - particularmente o Discus - mas pode ocorrer em algumas outras espécies, como a carpa. É causada por um parasita interno, o protozoário flagelado Hexamita (também conhecido como Octomitus ou Spironucleus). A maioria dos ciclídeos carrega baixos níveis do parasita em seus intestinos, mas em circunstâncias normais, eles não se transformarão em uma infecção prejudicial. No entanto, se o sistema imunológico estiver comprometido, por exemplo, devido à má qualidade da água, má nutrição ou estresse, o parasita se multiplicará e se espalhará. Se entrar em outros órgãos internos, os peixes logo morrem. Os sintomas típicos incluem coloração escurecida, apetite reduzido, emaciação e fezes brancas e fibrosas. O tratamento é feito através de medicamentos à base de metronidazol em conjunto com melhorias ambientais.
